Landscape photography
Orkney is renowned for its big open skies and spectacular coastline. Placed between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean our rugged coast is under the constant influence of the sea. This means there are plentiful opportunities throughout the year to capture the islands at their most dramatic. Orkney is a place where our lives are still influenced by the elements and so we are constantly weather watching!
With an intimate knowledge of the islands and its changeable light Raymond will help choose the best location to spend our day(s) based on the weather, light and season with the aim of helping you produce some arresting images. That might be at Skaill photographing huge Atlantic rollers topping the cliffs or on fine days capturing the reflection of hills in mirror calm lochs or tighter study shots of the sun reflected in dark sands. Sea cliffs, sea stacks, sand dunes and wide white beaches, landscape photographers are spoiled for choice in Orkney. A day on one of the outer islands including Hoy, Westray or Sanday is easy to arrange.
Who is this for?
A tailored day(s) like this is a popular choice for photographers preferring the exclusivity of having their own guide and there are benefits to working this way. Not least it allows you to spend the day at your own pace and each day is tailored to your own preferences in terms of location and what you want to achieve. Start and finish when you wish and depending on your experience level you can have as much or as little tuition as you require. Tea/coffee & biscuits are provided and depending on your choice we will either find a sheltered spot to get some soup on the stove or move to a cafe for lunch.
This is a private tour for a maximum of 3 people and the fee includes transport and ferry fares (if applicable). The £450 fee is for one or two people, a third person joining is an additional £75.00

What you need to bring
Clothing - It's a cliche but Orkney really can experience all four seasons in one day so it's best to be prepared. This means a set of good waterproofs and a warm layer including a hat and gloves. I have spare hats and gloves should you forget. I won't drag you out in torrential rain! but some of the most dramatic images are made in slightly more challenging conditions. A good pair of sturdy walking boots is also recommended.
Camera - I use a Nikon mirrorless system but any camera you use is fine.
Lenses - I'm a big fan of telephoto lenses for landscape photography and shoot anywhere between 24mm to 500mm. Again, whatever you have is fine but a short wide angle zoom such as a 24-70mm and a longer zoom e.g 100-400mm should have you covered for most eventualities.
Tripod - Orkney can be windy so always a good idea to have a sturdy tripod should you want to do some slow shutter work.
Batteries and media - There's nothing worse than losing out on shots because your battery has run out or you have filled up your card. Bring plenty of spares to keep you going for the day.
Camera cover - something to cover your camera should we encounter some weather will allow you to keep shooting.
